This study investigates whether a natural smell can be detected in the fluid around your brain and spine (cerebrospinal fluid) after you sniff it. It aims to understand how smells enter the brain in people with different body weights who are already scheduled for a routine spinal tap.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 60 years old.
  • You are scheduled for a routine spinal tap (lumbar puncture) as part of your medical care.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is either between 18 and 25 (lean group) or 30 or higher (obese group).
  • For the obese group, you do not have a confirmed diagnosis of diabetes.
  • You are not allergic to the natural odor used in the study.
  • You do not have a current cold, sinus infection, or past sinus/nasal surgery.
