Disorders of Consciousness Due to Severe Brain Injury

This study tests whether a simple smell test can help predict recovery of consciousness in patients who remain in a coma or minimally conscious state after a severe brain injury. If you or your loved one has been unresponsive for several days after sedation is stopped, this trial may provide useful information about prognosis.

Who can take part

  • You are currently in a neuro-intensive care unit (specialized brain injury ICU).
  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have been unconscious or minimally conscious for at least 72 hours after stopping sedation and starting to breathe on your own.
  • Your legal representative has given permission, or an emergency waiver has been activated.
  • You are covered by a health insurance or social security system.
