Nerve stimulation for alcohol use disorder in veterans

This study tests a non-invasive device that gently stimulates a nerve in your neck (the vagus nerve) to see if it can help reduce alcohol cravings and improve daily functioning. It is designed for veterans who struggle with heavy drinking and want to explore a new treatment option.

Who can take part

  • You are a U.S. military veteran between 21 and 65 years old.
  • You have been diagnosed with moderate or severe alcohol use disorder and have had heavy drinking days (5 or more drinks for men, 4 or more for women) on at least 5 days in the past month.
  • You can stop drinking for 12 to 24 hours without serious discomfort.
  • You do not have a serious heart condition, history of stroke, or any implanted device in your neck or chest.
  • You are not currently taking opioids or benzodiazepines, and you have not been in an abstinence-based treatment program in the last 90 days.
