Adjustable stiffness ankle-foot orthosis study

This study is testing a special ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) that can be adjusted to be more or less stiff. It's for people with foot drop or ankle weakness who already use or need an AFO, and can walk at least a short distance.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have weakness in the muscles that lift your foot or push your foot down (at least one ankle)
  • You already use or your doctor has prescribed an ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) – a brace that supports your ankle and foot
  • You can walk for 6 minutes straight, even if you need a cane or walker
  • You do not have severe foot deformities that prevent using a standard spring-like AFO, and you do not have knee weakness that would require a brace that also supports your knee
