Immediate balloon angioplasty for severe stroke with brain artery narrowing

This trial tests whether doing an angioplasty (a procedure to open a narrowed artery with a small balloon) as soon as possible after a severe stroke caused by a blockage in a brain artery can improve recovery. It is for people who arrive within 24 hours of their stroke and have a specific type of narrowing inside the skull.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You had a stroke that started within the last 24 hours and you have moderate to severe symptoms (NIH Stroke Scale score of 6 or higher).
  • Before this stroke, you were able to care for yourself (mRS score 0–2).
  • A CT scan shows that the stroke is caused by a severe narrowing (70-99%) in a large artery inside your skull, and that narrowing is not too calcified to treat.
  • You do not have a known heart condition that causes blood clots (like atrial fibrillation or a hole in the heart), and you have not had a recent bleeding stroke, severe kidney disease, or active bleeding.
