Who can take part

  • You must be 18 or older.
  • You must be scheduled for a planned lung surgery (VATS lobectomy or segmentectomy) that uses small cuts instead of a large chest opening.
  • Your lung function must be good enough based on breathing tests—specifically, FEV1 must be at least 50% of predicted normal and 1.5 liters, and DLCO at least 50% of normal.
  • You cannot have received a pleurodesis (a procedure that sticks your lung to your chest wall) during surgery.
  • If your surgery is switched to a larger chest opening (thoracotomy), you cannot take part.
  • You must be able to manage your own daily activities without help due to memory or thinking problems.
