Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older
  • You are having surgery (VATS) to remove air pockets and seal the lung for a first-time collapsed lung with no other cause
  • You have not had chest surgery or radiation on the same side before
  • You do not have another lung disease like COPD, cancer, or cystic fibrosis
  • You are not on medications that weaken your immune system, like strong steroids or chemotherapy
  • Your collapsed lung is not from an injury or infection
