Who can take part

  • You are 18 to 80 years old.
  • You are in the ICU and on a breathing machine (ventilator) that will be needed for more than 24 hours.
  • You need medication to keep you calm or to manage pain.
  • You are not allergic to opioid pain relievers (like morphine, fentanyl).
  • You do not have chronic pain that requires daily pain medication for more than 3 months.
