  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You are getting continuous sedation or pain relief medicine through a vein
  • You are on ECMO (a machine that helps your heart and lungs) for severe breathing problems, or on a breathing machine for severe breathing problems or a serious heart condition
  • You have been in the ICU for at least 24 hours and are not expected to stop life-sustaining treatment in the next day
