Who can take part

  • You are in the intensive care unit (ICU) and need a breathing machine (ventilator) with a tube down your throat.
  • You have been on the breathing machine for at least 12 hours.
  • You were not transferred from a hospital outside the UCHealth system.
  • You do not normally need a breathing machine at home through a hole in your neck (tracheostomy).
  • You are not pregnant or in prison.
