Bag CPAP vs standard oxygen for low oxygen levels

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have a new (not chronic) breathing problem causing shortness of breath, fast breathing (25 breaths per minute or more), or using extra muscles to breathe.
  • Your oxygen levels are still low (SpO2/FiO2 ratio below 315 or PaO2/FiO2 below 300) even when you receive at least 6 liters of oxygen per minute.
  • You do not have conditions that make CPAP unsafe (like vomiting, bleeding, untreated collapsed lung, severe face/neck injury, or a tracheostomy).
  • You do not have serious instability (recent cardiac arrest, shock, severely altered mental state, or a 'do not intubate' order).
