This trial tests whether starting a beta-blocker (a heart medication that slows the heartbeat and lowers blood pressure) soon after Takotsubo syndrome diagnosis helps prevent complications. You may qualify if you were just diagnosed and have no other serious heart conditions.

Who can take part

  • You must be diagnosed with Takotsubo syndrome (broken heart syndrome) in the last 48 hours.
  • You must have had a heart catheterization that shows no significant blockages.
  • You cannot have severe heart failure or very low blood pressure right now.
  • You cannot have a large pressure gradient inside your heart (>30 mmHg) that persists.
  • You cannot have had a prior heart attack or severe valve or heart muscle disease.
  • You cannot already be taking a beta-blocker medication (like metoprolol or carvedilol).
  • You cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding.
