Who can take part
- You are 65 years old or older.
- You are having planned (not emergency) upper abdominal surgery lasting at least 2 hours.
- You will receive general anesthesia with a breathing tube.
- Your anesthesia risk score is categorized as I, II, III, or IV.
- Your risk for lung problems after surgery is medium or high (based on a standard scoring system).
- You have not taken antibiotics, probiotics, or acid-reducing medications in the month before surgery.
- You do not have a current lung infection or serious lung condition.
