Who can take part
- You must be admitted to the ICU for the first time.
- You must be expected to need a breathing tube or ventilator for more than 24 hours.
- You must be a neurosurgical patient, meaning you had surgery for a brain tumor, subarachnoid hemorrhage, or traumatic brain injury.
- You cannot have a chronic lung disease like COPD, asthma, or chronic bronchitis.
- You cannot have a weakened immune system or have taken antibiotics in the last 3 months.
