Who can take part

  • You are between 65 and 85 years old.
  • You are scheduled for a hip or knee replacement under general anesthesia.
  • You are in good enough health to be classified as ASA I, II, or III.
  • You have not taken any medications for mental health or central nervous system conditions before surgery.
  • You have a certain level of cognitive function (score on a memory and thinking test) that is normal for your education level.
  • You must sign a consent form agreeing to participate.
