Who can take part

  • You are 66 years or older and scheduled for a first-time hip replacement on one side.
  • Your BMI is between 18 and 30.
  • You are generally healthy or have mild to moderate medical conditions (ASA status I-III).
  • You do not have a history of mental illness or score less than 8 on a memory test before surgery.
  • You are not taking certain medications for mental health, seizures, Parkinson's, or depression.
  • No allergies to melatonin or lidocaine, and no serious heart, brain, liver, or kidney problems.
