This trial looks at how the size of your heart's upper-left chamber (left atrium) changes after a procedure to restore a normal rhythm (cardioversion). It aims to see if these changes can predict whether atrial fibrillation (AF) will come back after a later procedure called radiofrequency ablation.

Who can take part

  • You must have been diagnosed with persistent atrial fibrillation in the last 6 months.
  • Before cardioversion, your left atrium (heart chamber) must measure between 40mm and 50mm on an ultrasound.
  • You must have had a successful cardioversion (with medicine or electric shock) to get your heart back to a normal rhythm.
  • You need to have had at least two heart ultrasounds (echocardiograms) – one before cardioversion and another 3-6 months after – to see if your heart size changed.
  • You cannot have had previous heart surgery or a prior ablation for AF.
