Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older
  • Your overall health is rated as ASA class 3 or 4 (serious or life-threatening illness)
  • You are having a planned major surgery (not an emergency)
  • You need to have a blood pressure monitoring line placed in an artery before you go to sleep
  • You do not have certain heart rhythm problems, severe valve disease, morbid obesity, difficulty with placing a breathing tube, drug addiction, or are not taking regular opioid pain medication
  • You are not pregnant
