- Age 18 or older
- For people planning gastric bypass or sleeve surgery: BMI of 35 or higher
- For people with obesity not planning surgery: BMI of 30 or higher
- For people without obesity: BMI between 18.5 and 25
- No prior bariatric surgery, no smoking, no diabetes, and no polycystic ovary syndrome
