Who can take part

  • You have an acute brain injury (like from a stroke, head trauma, or bleeding)
  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 24 hours
  • You do not already have a tracheostomy tube before arriving at the ICU
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You do not have a spinal cord injury in your neck
