Who can take part

  • You are 18 to 75 years old and were admitted to the ICU for a brain-related problem causing intubation
  • You have been on a mechanical ventilator for more than 48 hours
  • Your brain status is stable for safety (no dangerous pressure in the head) and you are on minimal sedation
  • You scored low on a basic brain-awareness scale and you passed a spontaneous breathing trial
  • This would be your first attempt to have the breathing tube removed under the study plan
