Preventing acid buildup in preterm babies on IV nutrition

This trial tests if replacing sodium chloride with sodium acetate in IV nutrition can prevent metabolic acidosis (too much acid in the blood) in preterm babies born before 33 weeks. If your baby is in the NICU and needs IV nutrition, this study may help keep their blood chemistry balanced.

Who can take part

  • Your baby is born before 33 weeks of pregnancy
  • Your baby needs intravenous nutrition (PN) during the first 28 days of life
  • You (as parent or legal guardian) give written permission for the study
  • Your baby does not have a genetic metabolic disorder
  • Your baby does not have severe liver failure or a serious birth defect needing multiple surgeries
  • Your baby does not have very high blood sodium (above 150) or severe blood alkalinity
