Advanced MRI for hard-to-control focal epilepsy

This study tests a new, very detailed type of MRI to find the exact spot in the brain where seizures start in people with hard-to-control focal epilepsy. If you have epilepsy that hasn't been helped by medications and previous MRIs didn't find a cause, this scan might give more answers.

Who can take part

  • You have focal epilepsy that hasn't improved with standard medications.
  • At least two different tests (like your seizure symptoms, an EEG, or a special brain scan called SPECT) have pointed to the same area in your brain as the seizure starting point.
  • You have had an epilepsy-focused MRI in the past that didn't show a clear cause for your seizures.
  • You are able to give informed consent for an MRI scan (or have a guardian do it if you're under 18).
  • You don't have any metal implants or devices that are unsafe for MRI, and you can lie still for the scan.
