Who can take part
- You are having spine surgery on the back of your neck, from the second to the seventh neck bone, possibly including the first three upper back bones.
- You can give your own permission to be in the study.
- Your surgery is not for an injury or emergency, and it's not a repeat or complex surgery.
- You are not taking medication like buprenorphine, naltrexone, or methadone for addiction treatment.
- You do not have diabetes, a neck infection, or a known allergy to local numbing medicines (bupivacaine or dexamethasone).
- If you are a woman who can become pregnant, you must have a negative pregnancy test on surgery day.
