This trial tests whether adding an inhaled antibiotic (amikacin) to standard IV antibiotics can better treat a serious lung infection (pneumonia caused by Gram-negative bacteria) in patients on a heart-lung machine (ECMO) and a breathing tube. If you or your loved one is on ECMO and has this type of pneumonia, this study may offer a new treatment approach.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have been on a heart-lung machine (ECMO) for at least 24 hours before the pneumonia was found.
  • You are on a breathing machine (ventilator) and have signs of pneumonia (such as fever, low blood oxygen, or new chest X-ray changes).
  • A sample from your lungs tested positive for Gram-negative bacteria (a common type of infection).
  • You are already receiving a specific IV antibiotic (piperacillin-tazobactam) as part of your treatment.
