This trial tests whether two medicines, pentoxifylline and vitamin E, can help prevent a type of lung inflammation called pneumonitis in people with stage III non-small cell lung cancer who are getting chemoradiation and a checkpoint inhibitor. These medicines are already used for other conditions and may lower the risk of this side effect.

Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older.
- You have stage III non-small cell lung cancer that is planned to be treated with chemoradiation and an immunotherapy drug (checkpoint inhibitor).
- You are able to do light activities or are up and about most of the day (ECOG score 0-2).
- Your liver and kidney function tests done in the last 30 days are within safe limits.
- You are not pregnant, have not had chest radiation before, and are not allergic to pentoxifylline, caffeine, theophylline, theobromine, or vitamin E.
- You have not had a heart attack, serious heart disease, or unstable heart rhythm in the last 3 months, and you are not at risk for major bleeding.
- You can participate if you take blood thinners, but your warfarin dose will be checked often.
