- You have a type of head and neck cancer (squamous cell) that started in the mouth, throat, voice box, or sinuses, not the nasopharynx.
- Your doctor has decided that you are not healthy enough for high-dose radiation to cure the cancer.
- You are 18 years or older and have a general health score (ECOG) of 0 to 3, meaning you can be up and about.
- You have not had radiation to the head or neck before (except for skin cancer), and no prior chemotherapy or immunotherapy.
- Your tumor is not in certain high-risk spots like the vocal cords, deep throat, or near the brain, and is not larger than 8 cm.
