- You have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
- Your A1c blood sugar average is between 7.0% and 10.0%.
- You have been managing your diabetes only with diet and exercise for at least 8 weeks (no diabetes pills or insulin).
- Your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or less.
- Your body still makes some of its own insulin (C-peptide level at least 0.5 ng/mL).
