Pain perception and the body's automatic nervous system

This study looks at how your body's automatic nervous system (like heart rate and sweating) relates to your experience of pain. You will be asked to do some pain tasks while we measure your body's responses. It's only for healthy adults aged 18–40.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 40 years old.
  • You are in good overall health with no major medical or psychiatric conditions (like heart disease, diabetes, chronic pain, or depression).
  • You are not pregnant and do not consume high amounts of alcohol or caffeine daily.
  • You have not taken alcohol, drugs, pain relievers in the last 24 hours, or more than 100mg of caffeine in the last 8 hours.
  • You are not taking medications that affect your nervous system (like benzodiazepines or nicotine).
  • You have no scars or reduced sensitivity on the areas that will be tested (usually feet, so shoe size must be at least 38).
