Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • You must be admitted to the ICU within the first 24 hours of the study.
  • You must have acute respiratory failure with low oxygen levels (PaO2 less than 60 mmHg).
  • You cannot have chronic lung diseases like interstitial lung disease or bronchiectasis (lung scarring or damage).
  • You cannot have a large collapsed lung (pneumothorax) or large fluid buildup around the lung (pleural effusion) that blocks clear ultrasound images.
  • You cannot have severe obesity, chest wall deformities, burns, or wounds that might interfere with the ultrasound probe.
