Who can take part

  • You are an adult in the ICU who is on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation).
  • You have a lung problem, and tests show your lung stiffness (static lung compliance) is under 40 mL/cm H2O.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or lower (not obese).
  • You have not had certain prior chest procedures (like a chest tube, thoracotomy, or thoracoscopy).
  • If your team can measure it, your abdominal pressure is 15 mm Hg or higher.
  • You have not taken part in this study before.
