Who can take part

  • The child needs to have a breathing tube (intubation) placed for surgery or another procedure that is planned or urgent (not an emergency).
  • The child must be a newborn or infant up to about 1 year old (52 weeks past their due date).
  • The legal guardians must sign a consent form before the procedure.
  • The doctor must not expect the intubation to be difficult based on their exam or past experiences.
  • The child cannot need a special method (other than a standard laryngoscope) to place the breathing tube.
  • The child cannot have certain serious health problems, like a heart condition that requires low oxygen levels, or need life-saving CPR at the time of intubation.
