Who can take part
- You must be of African American ancestry
- You must have a BMI of 28 or higher (a measure of body weight relative to height)
- You must have experienced DKA—a medical emergency with very high blood sugar (over 250 mg/dL), low blood pH, and ketones in your blood
- You cannot have serious heart, kidney, or liver disease, or active infections
- You cannot be pregnant
- Your diabetes diagnosis must be new—discovered within 90 days of your DKA emergency
