Using a special MRI to predict rectal cancer response to pre-surgery therapy

This trial uses a special type of MRI scan (called amide proton transfer-weighted imaging) to look at your rectal cancer before and after chemotherapy and/or radiation. The goal is to see if the scan can predict whether the cancer has completely disappeared by the time of surgery, which could help guide future treatment decisions.

Who can take part

  • You have advanced rectal cancer that has grown into or beyond the rectal wall or spread to nearby lymph nodes, but it can still be surgically removed.
  • You have already had chemo and/or radiation therapy for your rectal cancer before surgery.
  • You had a complete surgery to remove the rectal cancer, and the removed tissue will be checked under a microscope.
  • You are willing and able to sign a consent form after understanding what the study involves.
  • You do not have severe bowel blockage or a hole in the bowel that requires emergency surgery.
  • You have no history of other cancers, and you are not unable to have an MRI (e.g., due to metal implants or severe anxiety).
