Who can take part

  • You or your child must have severe or profound hearing loss (hearing threshold of 65 dB or greater).
  • A genetic test must show a mutation in the OTOF gene (the type that causes DFNB9 deafness).
  • You must be at least 6 months old.
  • An ear CT or MRI must show that your ear structure and hearing nerve are normal and that surgery is safe.
  • You cannot have other ear problems, like chronic ear infections, or have had a cochlear implant in the ear being treated.
