Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 48 hours.
  • Your doctor believes the reason you needed the ventilator is getting better.
  • Your oxygen levels are good (oxygen in your blood to oxygen you breathe in at least 200), and you breathe calmly (less than 30 breaths per minute).
  • Your blood pressure is stable, with little or no medication to keep it up.
  • You are awake, able to cooperate, and don't have a lot of mucus in your breathing tube.
