Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older and in the emergency department.
  • Your blood potassium level must be between 5.7 and 6.4 mmol/L (from a non-clotted sample).
  • You cannot have diabetic ketoacidosis or a hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (very high blood sugar emergencies).
  • Your blood sugar before treatment must be at least 4 mmol/L.
  • You must not need emergency treatments like IV insulin, nebulized albuterol, or IV sodium bicarbonate at the time of screening.
  • You must be stable (not needing resuscitation, high-flow oxygen, or having a high early warning score).
