  • You have low vitamin D levels (less than 20 ng/mL in your blood)
  • You have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in your hip or knee
  • You are planning to have hip or knee replacement surgery
  • You do not have other conditions that damage the joint, like rheumatoid arthritis, gout, a joint infection, or a birth defect
