Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You have acute respiratory failure and are on a breathing tube (ventilator).
  • You have been on the ventilator for at least 48 hours.
  • Your main illness has improved, and your doctor is planning to take you off the ventilator soon.
  • You do not have a severe nerve or muscle disease, or a central nervous system condition.
  • You have not been on muscle relaxant medications for more than 48 hours.
