This trial tests if a steroid called dexamethasone can prevent low blood pressure after spinal anesthesia for orthopedic surgery. If you are having hip, knee, or other bone surgery with spinal anesthesia and are otherwise healthy, this study may help reduce side effects.

Who can take part

  • You are having orthopedic surgery (bone or joint surgery) with spinal anesthesia.
  • You are in good general health (ASA score of 2 or less).
  • You do not have a history of heart rhythm problems or recent heart attack.
  • You do not have a history of major injuries (polytrauma).
  • You do not have bleeding problems, low platelets, or allergy to numbing medicine.
  • You are not currently taking steroids or certain antidepressants (SSRIs).
