Preventing infections in central lines for people on IV nutrition

This trial tests a new catheter lock solution (DefenCath) to prevent infections in people who need long-term IV nutrition through a central line. It compares the study drug to a standard heparin lock, and you'll be randomly assigned to one group.

Who can take part

  • You have a permanent central line (like a tunneled catheter or PICC) that's been in for at least 7 days
  • You need IV nutrition (TPN) for more than 6 months, at least 3 days a week (with 2 of those being full nutrition)
  • You are 18 or older and live in the US or Turkey
  • You have not taken any antibiotics (by mouth or IV) in the last 14 days
  • You are willing to have your line locked with the study drug (or a placebo) every 7 days, and you can be trained to do it or have a caregiver who can
  • You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, and you agree to use birth control if needed
