Long-term endurance training for sickle cell disease

This study tests whether a long-term endurance exercise program can improve physical fitness, reduce complications, and enhance quality of life for people with sickle cell disease. It is designed for patients whose condition is stable but who have had at least one pain crisis in the last three years.

Who can take part

  • You are over 15 years and 3 months old
  • You have sickle cell disease (HbSS or HbS-beta thal0)
  • You are in a stable condition, which means no blood transfusion in the last 3 months and no recent crisis or infection in the last month
  • You have been hospitalized for a vaso-occlusive crisis at least once in the last 3 years
  • You do not currently do regular exercise (more than 1 hour of moderate activity per week)
  • You have no other chronic inflammatory or infectious disease, and no heart condition requiring a pacemaker or blood thinners
