Who can take part
- Your tumor is in the rectum, within 15 cm of the anal opening as seen on an MRI
- You have been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the rectum (confirmed by biopsy)
- Your cancer is stage I, II, or III (based on the AJCC 8th edition), and you may have had chemotherapy or radiation before surgery
- Your surgeon plans to remove the cancer while keeping your sphincter (the muscles that help control bowel movements)
- You are an adult aged 18 or older
- You give written permission to participate
