Who can take part

  • Your tumor is in the rectum, within 15 cm of the anal opening as seen on an MRI
  • You have been diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the rectum (confirmed by biopsy)
  • Your cancer is stage I, II, or III (based on the AJCC 8th edition), and you may have had chemotherapy or radiation before surgery
  • Your surgeon plans to remove the cancer while keeping your sphincter (the muscles that help control bowel movements)
  • You are an adult aged 18 or older
  • You give written permission to participate
