  • Newly diagnosed rectal cancer (adenocarcinoma) confirmed by biopsy
  • Tumor located within 7 cm of the anus
  • Cancer stage T1–T3 with lymph-node involvement, but no distant spread
  • Age 18–75 years and able to tolerate surgery (good overall health)
  • Bowel sphincter (muscle) can be preserved during surgery
  • No prior colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or other cancers in past 5 years
