Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 70 years old and of African descent (for example, Black, African American, or Afro-Caribbean).
  • You have a high-risk APOL1 gene type (G1/G1, G1/G2, or G2/G2).
  • Your urine protein level (UACR) is 300 mg/g or higher, and your kidney function (eGFR) is at least 25.
  • You do not have type 1 diabetes. If you have type 2 diabetes, your blood sugar control must be stable (A1c about 8% or less).
  • You are not on dialysis or have had a kidney transplant, and you have no other major kidney disease.
