Who can take part

  • You are in the ICU and expected to need a breathing tube for at least 8 more hours.
  • You have acute respiratory failure with low oxygen levels in your blood (PaO2/FiO2 less than 300) while on at least 40% oxygen.
  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You or a family member can sign a consent form to join the study.
  • You are not on high doses of blood pressure medicines (more than 1 mg/h of epinephrine or norepinephrine).
  • You do not have severe acidosis, certain blood disorders, or a language barrier that prevents consent.
