Who can take part

  • Be between 1 month and under 18 years old
  • Be in the PICU (children’s intensive care unit) and expected to need a breathing machine for at least the next 3 hours
  • Have signs of your own spontaneous breathing while on the ventilator
  • Consent must be signed by the patient or a parent/relative if the patient can’t consent
  • Not have a decision already made to stop or withdraw life support
  • Not be pregnant, and able to provide a needed reference breathing waveform
