Who can take part

  • You need to be on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 24 hours.
  • You or a family member must sign a consent form agreeing to be in the study.
  • You cannot have had a breathing tube in place for more than 6 hours already.
  • You cannot be pregnant.
  • You cannot have had any surgery on your throat or windpipe in the past.
