  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You are in the ICU and on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation)
  • Your breathing tube was put in through your mouth (not through the nose)
  • You are expected to be on the ventilator for more than 48 hours
  • Your tube must be a standard-shape polyvinyl chloride “high-volume, low-pressure” type
