Who can take part
- You have sickle cell disease type SS or S-beta-zero thalassemia
- You are 18 years or older
- You are either at steady state (no crisis for at least 1 year), or currently having a pain crisis or acute chest syndrome
- You do not have a blood cancer or other blood disorder
- You do not have immune thrombocytopenia or take certain immune-suppressing or anti-inflammatory drugs
- You have not had a red blood cell exchange or transfusion in the last 3 months
